"Only one person can make it to the top and with enough perseverance and determination that can be you." Cushla Hume-Merry
My name is Cushla Hume-Merry I am a Youth(under 19) Laser Radial Sailor living in Wellington, New Zealand. I am a member of the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club, representing them throughout New Zealand and the World.
I am currently doing a Olympic campaign for 2012 in the Laser Radial which is the Woman’s Class selected in the Olympics. I moved into the Laser Radial at the age of fourteen in December 2004.
Now at eighteen some of my results and teams I am in are:
46th in the ISAF World Ranking Runner up 2008 ISAF Female Youth World Champion 2005 Female Youth World Champion New Zealand Laser Radial Female Youth Champion 2006/2007/2008 Yachting New Zealand National Youth Squad for 2005/2006/2007/2008 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team 2006/2007
New Zealand High Performance Squad 2007/2008
At the moment I am working towards my short term goal which is to become the 2008 VOLVO ISAF Youth World Champion. My long term goal is to represent New Zealand at the 2012 Olympics in the Laser Radial class and to bring home a medal for New Zealand. I have always known that my future will involve sailing, however in the past 3 years I have set my eyes on the 2012 Olympics, as I know with my continuious training it is a very realistic goal. I have Jo Aleh (current Olympic Representive for 2008) to train with up in Auckland which helps motivate me that little bit more to excel in my age grade (under 19) and in the Open Womans fleet in the World. Between my travels around New Zealand and Europe I am also a student at New Zealand Insititue of Sport in Wellington. I am competing a certificate in Sport Management and Excercise Perscription. I chose this course as I will be able to help perfect my training towards sailing and also understand sport managment. For more information on my World Circuit sailing Results visit my results page.
